Correcting a book and marking it read

Put right a record the catalogue got wrong, and mark a book read, from the phone.

Correcting a book

  1. Open the book and, under "Put it right", choose "Correct these details".
  2. Edit what’s wrong — title, authors, publisher, published date, edition, pages, language, ISBN, LCCN, or the description. The book’s topics, weight and size sit under "More details", folded away until you open it. Rather than typing a description out, you can photograph the printed one and let the phone read it; see Photographs and descriptions.
  3. Choose Save corrections. Only the fields you actually changed are sent, so opening the editor and backing out changes nothing.

The book’s page on the phone also shows, when the record has them, its editors, translators and illustrators under the authors, its topics (with Source details on where each came from), a Physical section with the binding, size, weight and list price and this copy’s condition and collector details (a guest sees no prices), every language it is in, what it is when it is not a book ("DVD, 2 discs"), its reading level and Lexile measure, a magazine issue’s volume, number and date, and its ISSN and ASIN. These are corrected on the website.

The app then tells you which of two things happened, because book records are shared between libraries. A detail you added to a field the catalogue had left empty is Recorded — it takes effect at once and you’ll see it on the book. A detail that would replace something the catalogue already holds is Proposed for review instead, and the book goes on showing the existing value until an administrator has looked at it. A single save can do both, and the app reports both. This is the review policy working, not the app failing to save. When a change for review touches the title, authors, ISBN or LCCN, the app first asks where it comes from — the printed book in your hands is already chosen — and Cancel there saves nothing. Changed your mind? Put the catalogue’s value back in the field and save: your own version of that detail is cleared from your copy, your proposal for it is withdrawn, and the app says the book is back to the shared record.

Marking a book read

A book’s detail screen carries "Mark as read", and that is the whole of it — one tap, from wherever you finished the book. Tap it again ("Read — tap to unmark") if you marked the wrong one. The change shows immediately rather than after a wait, and the Read mark travels with the book through the list and the covers grid.

Read status is yours, not the Library’s. Everyone in a Library keeps their own, nobody sees anybody else’s, and it follows you if you switch between Libraries. That is why it is the one thing on the screen a guest can change too — it is their own record, not the Library’s. Reading sessions with dates and page progress stay on the website; the phone keeps the one-tap version.

Available to everyone in a Library, guests included. It needs a signal — the tap is not saved on the phone for later, and if the save fails the app puts the mark back and says so rather than leaving you thinking it stuck.
