Description
In Skating to Antarctica, Jenny Diski explored her staggeringly dysfunctional childhood with a mentally ill mother. It was a life of extremes with the family swinging from comfortable prosperity to total poverty and back again. Jenny was alternatively smothered and abandoned. In Strangers on a Train, Diski picks up her story at the age of 16, when, believing that she was going mad, she checked herself into a mental hospital. She traces the journey back to some kind of sanity and intercuts it with a contemporary journey across America in the company of strangers. This is an exploration of strangers, strangeness and estrangement.
